Over the years, I've learned the ins and outs of styling curly hair, and I’m excited to share five curly hairstyles that I'm obsessed with right now.
1. The Highlighted or Balayaged Curly Lob
This one is easily the hottest trend for curly hair at the moment. A shoulder-length lob with highlights or balayage is a look that’s both fresh and sophisticated.
If you're working with straight hair, a small curling iron (.5” or .75”) is perfect to create the curls, alternating directions for a natural look.
For those with naturally curly hair, I always recommend a good curl cream and a diffuser.
Scrunch the hair upside down, diffuse from the roots, and leave about 10% moisture in to air-dry. This helps prevent frizz and keeps the curls defined.
2. The Curly Graduated Chin-Length Bob
This hairstyle brings back memories of the 80s, reminiscent of the iconic cuts that defined that era. It's short, stylish, and completely on trend.
I’ve recreated this look countless times, and the secret is in the cut itself—it dictates the style.
For clients with straight hair, I use a 1” or .75” curling iron to add tight curls in alternate directions, framing the face perfectly.
For curly hair clients, a little defining cream does wonders to enhance the natural shape.
3. The Relaxed Blonde Wave
Blonde relaxed waves are trending everywhere on Instagram, featuring a soft, effortless look that’s both modern and chic.
This style is a bit looser and more laid-back than tighter curls, but it’s just as striking.
To achieve this look, I use a large 1.5” curling iron, holding it vertically to create soft, flowing waves.
A little holding spray afterward, and you're good to go. This look is especially popular with balayaged blonde or grey tones—it's a real head-turner.
4. Tight Ringlet Spiral Curls
There’s nothing quite like a head full of tight spiral curls. This style exudes confidence and energy, and I love working with clients who want to embrace their natural curls.
The key here is to use a curl cream and either let the hair air-dry or gently diffuse it.
Big, bold curls like these bring out a youthful spirit, and I've found that many clients with naturally curly hair love to own this look.
5. Venice Waves on a Redhead
This look brings back the carefree vibe of the 70s, when in any beach waves were all the craze. It’s an effortless, natural style that remains undeniably glamorous.
Having created many beach wave styles over the years, I’ve found that the secret to getting that flawless wave is using a 1” curling iron.
For redheads, or anyone looking for that effortlessly cool vibe, this style is a go-to. It’s light, carefree, and perfect for anyone who wants to channel their inner beach girl or skater vibe.
Over the years, I’ve seen how powerful a great curly hairstyle can be. These five styles are my current favorites, and they’re versatile enough to suit any client, no matter their face shape or hair type.
As I always say, curls are a commitment—but with the right products and techniques, they can be your best asset.
